Build quality is solid.
|
No NetFlix !!!
|
Plays all video formats flawlessly, no matter the container. While the Aug2012 firmware upgrade improved the interface, I still find it rather slow and buggy. The video quality is excellent though. If it can handle youTube it should have no problems handling Netflix. I hope Pivos adds Netflix support in the near future.

Remote No built in WiFi
|
Have been using this player for a while and so far has performed fantastic, has played every file format I've thrown at it without a hitch. Works great in all aspects, only have 2 complaints. First the reception for the remote control is horrible, you have to point it directly and have a perfect clear line of sight at the media player. The second is no built in wifi which would be great for convenience purposes. But still very happy with the player.

|
bad user interface , but it is not problem for me .I really like the old classic look .
|
I bought this unit to use it with an old Color Television I Didn't check the internet capabilities of this one . I am not worried about that .I used my WD 500GB external HDD with this one .everything working fine ,will add a 2TB internal HDD later .I have submitted the rebate request .

Faster than the OPLAY, plays all what I played with my OPLAY
|
Slow on the internet access. Don't believe the network is 1Gb. Keyboard issues and not straight forward.
|
Overall I fell in love with this device. Plays all my videos like a charm. Internet access sucks! Internet access is slow and wen using just the remote, it's not a simple task. More likely to be try and error to find good buttons to move with the webpage. Mouse does help a lot but when it comes time to type, it's not straight forward. My wife watches programs over the WEBTV option and it's simple. With this device you have to try a few things in order to find out how it works. Not much in documentation.

- Read all formats I've thrown at it - No issues with swapping the harddrive from computer and back
|
- Have not tried the network options but there are some bad reviews about this.
|
First off I DO NOT use the networking options. I personally don't want to bother with it as then I'll need to either buy a powerline adapter, run a long cable through my house, or use wifi which would give bad streaming options when watching full HD videos anyway.
I use the swapable harddrive option where I take my harddrive from the Pivos box and put it into my computer's swappable harddrive bay. I've never had a problem so far with harddrive needing to reformat or any movie file formats not being read. I really love this thing as it does exactly what I need it to do. The open harddrive option allows me to use multiple harddrives without being forced to always transfer data to a dedicated harddrive. Also it takes almost no time to read as it's looking through the harddrive and not an inherently slow usb device.
I highly recommend if you don't care for network options.

Was cheap, the enclosure is well built out of aluminum and the quick removable SATA drive tray is nice. The remote is an improvement over the initial version. Technical support worked, I got my rebate as well.

My first unit failed within a month - wouldn't recognize the Hard drive all of a sudden.

My first unit died early.

The rebate is a lie!!

Product is okay to my requirement as i do not use it for internet. However the rebate offer is not valid because 'The postmark of your submission is beyond the required date for this offer' This is the first time i do not get a rebate. I follow every rule and i mail the rebate next day when i received my media player, there is no way that it is beyond the required date. Anyway I will not buy any product from this company in the future.

Plays every file type I have, so far. The box itself is very nice, compact, lots of ports and connections, hard drive bay.
|
poor menus. confusing on how to set up the jukebox. SLOW transfer speed on network to internal hard drive via SAMBA or FTP.
|
The many flaws of this box detract from its potential. The menu system is rather clunky (even after updating to latest firmware) and slow. The jukebox feature is very confusing and I cant seem to get it to work very well. If you choose to install an internal hard drive, the transfer speeds over the network (using SAMBA or FTP) is slow, around 3-5 MB/s. The hard drive is formatted as NTFS and following the pivos forum suggestion to format as ext3, the speed temporarily went up to 6-8 MB/s. However after transferring a few movies via SAMBA the speed dropped to 2 MB/s until i did a hard reset on the box, and then it would consistently get slow again after transferring a couple big files. I am using all gigabit switches, etc. The problem lies somewhere with the networking in the box, since copying a file from a USB stick to the internal HDD using the menus goes very quickly, about 20 MB/s. NOTE if your format the internal drive as ext3, then hooking up the box to your windows computer via usb3 wont recognize the device. The most important aspect of the media box is how it plays media, and I can happily report that it plays back every file type and codec I have right now. The navigation controls are a bit awkward, much room for improvement. The other goodies that come with it are ok, the apps (youtube, podcasts, etc) and browser are slow and often dont work properly. For example none of the videos actually play in the youtube app. Playing movies over the network works quite well too, but navigating through files and directories is a bit slow over the network. The hardware design of the box is very nice. Its compact, black and contemporary, has a convenient hard drive port. There are HDMI, composite and component outputs, 3 USB2.0 inputs and an SD card reader too. My Recommendation is to forget about the internal hard drive. Instead buy a 500+GB USB3 portable hard drive (2.5" usb powered) and connect that to the Aios via the USB2.0 port. Then when you want to copy files from the computer, just disconnect the portable hard drive and connect to your computer and transfer at USB3 speeds. Then connect back to the Aios box. Sure is a bit of leg work, but you will save hours transferring files.

It does play a lot of movie types Ability to add a hard drive Has a front display Great device if you're a developer Strong community support
|
Front display will only display time in 24 HR format Doesn't have a full screen zoom option, all zoom options will leave black bars on your screen Complex user interface Too many 3rd party firmwares with little differences The product feels like a beta product Complex update process that doesn't work well on OSX (OSX keeps trying to extract files that the AIOS needs unextracted)
|
I read several reviews trying to find a media player, and I had narrowed it down to the WD Live and the Pivos AIOS. I regret buying the Pivos AIOS. I have all my media on a storage server, so the hard drive feature was a nice to have, not a requirement. The user interface feel's cheap, the menu has a full screen stretch, but no files have this option. You can get it close, but you'll never have a full screen stretch, or on 4:3 ratio files, it'll never use the full height of the screen. This is very annoying, and makes my 46 inch TV look smaller. The update process is so complex, and mine actually broke the DLNA feature of the AIOS. Also, it constantly forgets my windows logons for my shares. However, if you are a developer, the source code is available on their website, so you can develop apps and stuff really easily, and share them through their forum. Never the less, I purchased a WD Live after the fact, and I really wish I'd just bought it in the first place, simple update process, full screen movies, mindless operation, it simply plays movies, and offers a lot more features that are easy to use. Also, still never received my mail in rebate. I'd give this 1 star if I could, but I bought this in store without an orderID.

High quality build & hardware capabilities. Plays just about every video codec there is. Has 10/100/1000 ethernet.
|
Horrible interface! Clunky software. Difficult to use remote control. Firmware needs to be updated via USB (rather than over internet).
|
This is one of the strangest media devices I have ever purchased, and I have tried many many before. I would call it "bipolar" if it was a person. It has fantastic hardware features, and yet, an abysmal software interface! On the one hand, it has the best quality build I have seen in a device in this price range, housed inside a beautiful brushed metal box, and has just about every method of input/output available, including component, toslink, HDMI, USB, 10/100/1000 ethernet, hotswap tray for a 3.5" hard drive, etc. However, and this is a BIG however, it has the absolute worst interface I have ever seen. The interface is ugly, clunky, slow, and amateurish. It is almost as if they spent so much money on developing the hardware that they had no money left to develop the software! I have upgraded many times to their latest firmware (which by the way has to be done manually by copying a file onto a USB stick and plugging it into the device - why it cannot be done live over the internet like the much older Popcorn Hour I don't know) and the interface remains the same ugly atrocity as before - yes I know, there are endless "beta" firmware which apparently have a better look, but it shouldn't have to be like this. I have heard more recently that Pivos is developing an XBMC type interface, but I am not sure whether this will be available for the AIOS, or if it will only work with their new XIOS box. This device is certainly not for anyone who wants a "plug and play" media player out of the box. For a better media "experience" even my old Popcorn Hour A-100 provides a much more usable interface.

Internet support is poor.

The internet functionality on this box is very disappointing. Don't bother if that's part of the reasons you want this box. Plays all types of video and audio files well however. Didn't get my rebate and got a lot of running around about it so don't factor that in to the price. Support is through the Pivos forums but the mod there get really up tight if you make any negative comments.

- All the internet functionality doesn't work - Browser is slow to the point that you won't use it - I contacted Pivos so many times but nobody reply email to me about my rebate status. I really doubt if they are willing to send the rebate

The box can only be considered as a media player and I am unable to use any of the internet functionalities. The customer support from Pivos upset me the most. I bought so many unsatisfied electronic product every year, I never come to any webpage to write bad comment once their support show some effort to help me to solve the problem. There is absolutely no support from Pivos. I am really shouldn't spend $120 to buy this box.

Interface, speed, lack of features

If all you want to do is stream a few videos, this will do the job for the best price, but if you are a heavy user, look elsewhere. The interface is absolutely HORRIBLE. Its pretty universally dispised by all users on its own forum, but for whatever reason they won't address it. its bright yellow, and you can barely see the folders and text. you cant sort your files by date, only alphabetically. the interface is very slow to respond, and often double-clicks. There is no netflix support, the apps are useless.... if you dont care about any of those shortcomings, its a deal deal for $75.

This is my upgrade from WD media player live. Bit better that WD, but not as good as I expected it to be. Had to switch to wired, wi-fi is slow. The browser is very slow and apps are useless.

- Plays any kind of format - Customizable subtitles - Constant software upgrades and new features
|
- Weak web browser - No Flash support - For the tech-savvy user
|
This little box plays anything you throw at it, for an excellent price. I still couldn't find a video or subtitle format that wouldn't play on this. However, the lack of Flash support in its very slow web browser hindered my plans of having a good webTV to watch non-European soccer. Also, you gotta be ready to download and install new firmwares and read forums and instructions in order to activate new features. Tech-impaired users can use it, but will miss a lot of great features that come up frequently.

Poor interface Remote Apps are useless HDMI 1.3 and cannot support 3D files and Movies

When it comes to play different media file format this is a very solid unit. It easily and without delay can play all file formats. The interface is very poor and it is a duplication of lots of no name Chines media player. I hope Pivos will come with a better version of interface. Applications are useless. Very slow and hard to work (You tube,...) There is no user friendly Web Browser and HTML5 cannot support either Flash or Silverlight. Remote is another pain and designed by unprofessional. Unit has good potentials but bad interface make it overall poor. I recommend to pay a little bit more and have a unit with better hardware and interface.

No Flash in Browser
|
For what I spent I would say that I got good value for my money. WiFi connection wasn't all that great so I went with hard wire. Plays all my video and music files. Installed a 2tb drive for storage, networked it to all my other computers, no issues. Browser isn't all that great and it doesn't do Flash but then that is not what I bought it for. YouTube is not a problem, good on the 'big screen'. Some small issues (remote control must be pointed directly at unit) but over all a worthwhile purchase. One note though, get a USB mouse for it..

Good video and audio quality. Nice finish. Small size. Relatively inexpensive.
|
Poor keyboard and mouse support. Bright red light when off. Front panel display seems to exist solely for displaying rude messages and the wrong time. Limited wireless adapter support. Very weak firmware.
|
The hardware in this little box is top quality. Video quality is excellent, even at 1920x1080. The analog audio output is also very good and it also handles HDMI audio/video well. The biggest drawback is the software. Functionality and customization are limited. It might be more versatile with a UPnP server (not tested) but the interface is quite weak otherwise.

3.5" HDD interface, wide media files support
|
Slow network speed, not the best interface design
|
This is a very solid unit when it comes to playback. I love that it will play blu-ray and DVD ISOs to perfection, as well as MKV and almost every other media file type.
The internal 3.5" hdd bay is great addition and allows you to use cheap hard drives with large capacity. Currently using a 3TB hard drive with the unit.
I have never tried the wireless USB network interface, because I can't find a compatible type, so I am only using a wired LAN interface. Unfortunately, despite the player having 1 GBPS LAN port, it transfers files VERY slowly over FTP: it will max out at about 50 MBPS, so around 6-7 megabyte/sec. This means that transferring large files takes forever, although I see this as a relatively minor issue.
It also seems that the internal HDD is interfaced over USB and not over SATA, a weird design choice. Although this is more than enough for smooth media playback, at the same time it severely affects the internal HDD transfer rate.
Oddly enough, the hardware of the player has a USB 3.0 interface but it does not appear to support connection of external hard drives over it. I tried connecting it to my USB3 enabled PC, but it simply locks the PC up, so that doesn't seem to be working.
While the files are being transferred over FTP to the unit's internal HDD, the unit is not usable: it does not have enough CPU power to play media and transfer files at the same time.
I have not tried the bit-torrent functionality as I don't really need it.
The Samba interface is functional but subject to same speed limits as the FTP.
The user interface is pretty ugly but it works and responds quickly.
All in all, the strong points of this device are: 3.5" HDD bay, wide media files support range, built in FTP server, composite and HDMI ports. Solid operating system software (it's based on linux. It very rarely crashes during regular usage, and it's frequently updated).
But the hardware design on which the entire platform seems to be deployed is indeed very cheap, so it should probably retail for less than it currently does.

Abysmally written owner's manual. Remote designed by the competition to make it user-unfriendly Menu structure looks like this is a beta model, where Pivos expects it's customers to do the development work it should have done before releasing this product.
|
The owner's manual was obviously written by someone with rudimentary English skills and a penchant for using tiny fonts. Not only was it lacking a lot of information, but a lot of what is there is gibberish - for instance: the "options" button opens the "options menu". WOW, cool, but WTF is in the "options menu"? You wouldn't know unless you pushed the button. The only way I could get any half-decent information on operating the AIOS was to go to several AIOS user-forums, where other bewildered AIOS owners were also trying to figure out how to use this media player. Once most of the initial problems were solved, I found that the player works pretty well, as long as I'm willing to tolerate the primitive, somewhat clunky UI. Pivos really needs to provide AIOS owners with a better remote - one that is properly designed and one that works. The stock remote is flaky, sometimes not responding to keys and other times jumping past menu items. The key layout is the most non-intuitive of any remote I've ever seen. The keys themselves are tiny and very poorly labeled, some only with tiny, cryptic icons. Off-axis to the player, the remote most often doesn't work. Pathetic! There is an LED display on the front of the AIOS, but it is so tiny that it's unreadable from more than 6 feet away. Why did they bother? There's lots of connectivity - component, HDMI usb 2 &3, toslink audio etc. I also like the SD card slot being located just behind the left side of the face plate - very handy. The internal HD bay is a nice touch, except that it only will accommodate 3.5" drives, not 2.5" ones. The fan seems to be fairly quiet, but I've only had this unit for several days. Overall, this is a pretty good machine for under $100 (I got mine for $78.99 including the WiFi dongle).

Plays everything in my collection Native (simple) video wall support Supports IMS streams
|
UI a bit ugly Power light is bright from certain angles
|
Bought this to replace the popular Patriot Box Office. This plays everything in my collection fine and supports IMS streams as well. Firmware releases seems frequent so I'm hopeful minor bugs will be addressed (such as subtitle settings not being saved).
The only real negatives are: - UI is quite ugly. Yes, there are 3rd party firmware available but the stock one is quite lacking. If you change the background it only changes it at the main screen and not any of the other screens. - the power led light is quite bright from certain angles and can be a bother to some. I wish there is an option to disable it or at least lower the intensity...
Note that I do not use any of the browser/NAS/BT features, as I have a dedicated NAS for that stuff. So I cannot comment on those features. As a pure media player though, can't complain too much.

Easy set up, quick remote response, 3.5" HDD bay
|
Hidden files show in menus, backgrounds bright orange and cannot be changed, firmware update s are available only through their website as a download, eg, install the update to your thumbdrive then manually update the player.
|
Hidden system files show up along with your media menu files, regardless of how you have windows configured. Yes you can delete some of the file types in windows so they do not show, but then as soon as windows is rebooted it will recreate these files. Western Digital Live, as bad as it was didn't have this issue.
Main entrance menu colour can be changed to grey, however all of the subsequent menus cannot be changed and are still bright orange-yellow.
Most TV's, BluRay players, media players etc can update their firmware directly if networked. This cannot. Seems odd this isn't capable. Not that it's a big deal to do this manually. It's just easier when hardware lets you know new firmware is available rather than having to check out their website.
In spite of the hidden files showing, crappy bright menu background and no automatic firmware updating, this unit is the cats ass compared to the Western Digital Live. I'm no networking expert, but I have a little tech savvy, and the WD dropped connections (LAN), stalled, locked, would not reconnect until modem, router and main computer were rebooted. No firmware update s, windows and router tweaking, or hours looking for answers in WD forums ever did correct any of the constant issues with the WD.
Aios is a snap, quick to boot, quick to load media, easy to use and responsive interface. There are no issues playing any of the file types, including high bitrate HD material, lossless Flac files, ISO's MKV's etc. Highly recommend to anyone with a library of different media they want easily streamed to their TV and audio system. One star off for lack of automatic firmware updating, hidden system files showing, and garish background colour.

Promising unit if all the features would work as expected
|
Feels like a beta tester and getting very frustrated
|
I got this unit at a good price and I was really excited with all the promised possibilities. I have to say that when it works it works well but it's not always the case. First, the network issue : wireless connection with the usb transmitter does'nt work flawlessly, it's very deceiving. Some drives are recognized, other ask you a login that NEVER work. Try to figure out what is the problem, wrote on their forum, had answers, possibilities, clues, upgrade firmware, downgrade firmware, screenshots of my configurations, browsing the internet. Nothing seems to fix the problem. Installed an internal hard drive to the unit, try to format it, error message stating that I can't... So, what does work on it ???

Great media player, the controller is easy to manipulate as it being the perfect size. remote does not interfere with any of my other devices.
|
the orange background needs to be changable, it hurts your eyes.
|
bought this to replace my htpc, and its done the job perfectly. can't complain about anything except, the non customisable back ground color. seriously its orange not even a nice orange. how about orange icons on a black background?

-Full sized remote -Snappy rendering/decoding of high bitrate video
|
-Fan can be heard in a silent room -Remote navigation makes an annoying click (can be disabled)
|
Picked up this unit a couple of weeks ago and it's been great. It's definitely faster than the PBO and OPlay though it's bigger and has a small fan in it.
The default firmware was a bit old so check yours before using. The update was about 150MB but installed pretty fast.
Setup was easy though it had a manual IP set out of the box. I couldn't connect to my network shares by IP but once I set it to DHCP, I easily found my samba shares.

I have used many of the media players out. I recently was using a self-made HTPC and a WD TV Live Plus. The WD was too slow, most youtube content did not play at all, using a USB WiFi Adapter on it slowed it down and made it impossible to use/surf. I switched to the Pivos Aios player, put in my own 750GB SATA Drive. This thing is AMAZING, plays all video and audio formats, and outputs video in 1080p (HDMI) properly. I am using a Pivos USB WiFi Adapter on it and the internet connection on it is amazing and stable. The connection does not drop, ALL youtube and youtubeXL content play properly without fail. All of the Apps that come with it work smoothly. I have not had a single issue with this unit. I love this thing. The UI is also relaly nice (compared to WD). If you want an all in one complete multimedia player that also lets you surf the web on your TV, this thing is the one. 100% happy with it.

|
|

Great file format support Excellent customer support (even taking feature requests) Reasonably priced
|
Bulky remote control No CEC support No netflix support (yet) Firmware a little buggy
|
Just purchased this gem to replace my patriot box. Its a vast improvement compared to PBOX once you update to the latest firmware. Theres a few kinks that need to be worked out but it seems like the Pivos team is dedicated to listening to its customers and making it better.
The remote control is bulky and annoying, the box itself is more responsive than others but powercycling is a little slow. Hard to read text if you set a custom background (specially a black background). The menu sometimes for me randomly goes back to the main screen (specially if you're in wireless settings with no AP). Still experimenting with the box.
I already love this product compared to the others I have used. I cannot wait until the kinks have been ironed out and I hope the Pivos group will continue to add new features and listen to its fanbase. If they do, they have just acquired a family of new longterm customers

Streams Blu-Ray ISO's better than my WD Live Hub.
|
May not stream them all like my WD Live Hub
|
I just purchased this media streamer and could not get any networking to connect. No internet or local networking was possible with new out of the box unit. Yes Samba was set on and a network cable connected directly to the unit. It also had the proper default gateway and valid IP addresses. So this is how a new product is shipped out! Shame. Shame. Shame. After downloading firmware update 2.8.0.5 and updating from 2.1.5.1 the unit started to work as expected. Although after the update it was still useless until I selected factory defaults and restarted it.
For those who found this forum you may be the few that don't actually return this product. Also I hope your a technical person because the manual does not mention much about the settings. Best of luck! Maybe there should be a global "don't care " setting.
I'll check it out see if it is worth keeping. I have a few Blu-Ray and DVD iso's to try. So far 1 out of 10 BD.iso caused the box to reset!

- so far played all type of videos I tried - many connections/ports available (SD/mms/sdhc... card slot, 3 x USB2, 1xUSB3, hdmi, component, RJ45 for GB network ..) - possible to add internal 3,5' SATA HDD - good/solid build (metal - not plastic) - big remote controller (many people complain about remote controller but I don't agree with that) - possible to control interface by using remote keyboard/mouse (almost any functionality)
|
- firmware updates needed to fix bugs (and Pivos is actually committed, they are updating FW and they are taking feedback from users). Also 3rd part GUI is available if you like more 'fancy' interface.
|
I used PC as HTPC and PS3 as media center so I am not very familiar with other types of the similar devices on the market as PBO, WDTV, Asus player etc (I am familiar what they do and their capabilities and interfaces). I got tired of managing HTPC. I like PS3 playback (for me this is one of the best players and it does amazing upconverting job) but I cannot play all type of files and latest sony updates introduced additional protection in playing BD rips (it's sufficient to say that is limiting me a lot as a user and I am not fond of Sony policy and limitations).
I think that this unit is better than any other similar device on the market. A lot of options and it's SIMPLE - plays video/music/pictures, allows streaming (of course limited so for example Netflix is not supported due to the licensing - it cost s a lot to get certified to support such services) etc. The FW is still buggy but Pivos is committed to fix it (they already have a couple of releases). I don't agree with many of the comments in official Aios thread about limitations - this is not HTPC but darn good media player with possibility to add internal 3,5' SATA HDD and to connect other storage over USB port ,network or to stream.
I am happy user and I recommend it (if you are concern about specific function please do your research - my main requirements were internal HDD support, connections and video support/playback). If Pivos continues to improve FW I am sure that this device will make many people happy. Good job Pivos!

Everything seems to work. Plays most file formats that I have thrown at it.
|
Definitely a first generation firmware. 1. No root password for the unit. (some might consider that good.) 2. When formatting the internal drive, it is identified as external. Not a problem but might confuse some. 3. Under the weather app, when selecting a Canadian City, there is no 'V' in the alphabet. Had to pick Burnaby. 4. Youtube videos try to run, but it just skips from one title to the next. 5. Browser is very slow and awkward. 6. If you are using it, add a wireless keyboard. 7. FTP works, but the menu to enable it is initially blank not OFF or ON. 8. Samba share is SLOW. Transfer across my GB network link is at ~350Kb/sec Running on Gb DLink switchs with Cat5e.
|
While it is an upgrade from my 2 year old Asus O!Play HDP-R1, the firmware has a lot of bugs. Lots of potential, but it will need a few new firmware releases. The included applications are pretty weak, and some do not work properly. It works, but I would wait for new firmware before purchasing.
Addendum; I have had time to dismantle the unit. There are no ports to add RAM or make any internal modifications.

Great value, flexibility and build quality
|
Slow internet (may be my usb dongle), slow to copy from 1 drive to another, rear usb ports cannot power usb powered hard drives.
|
My first unit never worked properly - erratic HDMI connection and it would keep losing connection with attached USB and SD cards. Replacement unit works great. A nice big remote with lots of features not available on my WDTV Live +. It has a really nice aluminum case with tons of inputs (4 USB ports!) I hooked up a cheap Belkin WiFi dongle F7D1101 v1 and it was found and started working right away after entering the Password. Same with my cordless Logitech mouse. I especially love that you can pop in a 3.5" hard drive and use that for your main media storage. It's not perfect but it's pretty close. It has played everything I've tried, so far and the firmware update was a piece of cake although it was pretty big at 137MB in size. All in all, I am really happy with this unit from this new company and think it is a remarkable value.
